Test_Lab: Function Creep
The third Test_Lab of 2017 takes the so-called 'Function Creep' as its main theme. Function Creep: 'the gradual widening of the use of a technology or system beyond the purpose for which it was originally intended.'
How does a robotic vacuum cleaner use the digital floor plans it makes as it moves through your house? Does a weather forecasting app really need to know where you are when you’re not using it? And why is Siri's microphone function always on? We hardly think about questions like these in our everyday use of these technologies, yet such subtle forms of data collection underlie so-called function creep: the gradual widening of the use of a technology or system beyond the purpose for which it was originally intended. Is it a coincidence when a discount on a second movie ticket pops up in your Instagram feed right after you’ve discussed evening plans with your partner? At the very least, it’s creepy!
At this edition of V2_'s Test_Lab we’ll explore the consequences of allowing “smart” devices to constantly collect our personal data. Through live experiences and presentations of work in progress, we’ll look at whether or not the services these applications provide compensate for their creepy side effects, and how to distinguish technical reality from paranoia.
